Riding the Ice

In the deadness of winter

The icy river flows

As the current winds into the sea

Before the sea

A massive waterfall

Far off in the distance

A majestic eagle perches on a limb

His talons brace the barren branch

A temporary resting place

His hunting stand

The brisk winter breeze blows

As the edges of the river are frozen

From his watch the eagle scours the river for food

He watches the water surface

As a block of ice floats swiftly down the river

Inside that block of ice is a salmon

He swoops down

Latching on to the block of ice

Chipping at the ice with his beak

Pecking and stabbing

Scratching with his talons

He rises again for a short moment

Then descending with speed

Seizing the ice again and chipping away

He still has time before the waterfall

Again he rides the air currents

The waterfall comes closer

Again chipping away at the ice

Hovering and swooping down

The waterfall can now be heard

It is approaching faster and faster

He frantically chips away at the ice

Rising again and diving down

Grappling with the block of ice

Suddenly instant horror

His finds his beak frozen to the ice

Sudden fear consumes the eagle

Frozen to the ice

Enveloped by terror

Frozen to his temptation

Unable to escape

His appetite becomes a trap

His desire becomes a snare

Silent scream never heard

Silent screech without a word

He still had time until time elapsed

He still had wings until they were useless

He still had strength until it was overcome by the ice

One with the block of ice

Riding the ice to his destruction
