The Baton

The baton has been dropped

In the church and in the nation

Was it the young or the old?

Tell me which generation

It lays there on the track

While others run ahead

It lies for all to see

While the church remains dead

Will someone pick it up

Will someone take it and advance

Will someone begin to run

Will someone take a chance

I stare at that baton

I expect someone to grab it

But in doing nothing at all

Some have formed a habit

Others want you to think

They have finished the race

While the baton lies there

Unmoved from its place

Anointed men and women

They have come and gone

The church is waiting for someone

To grab that dropped baton

The crowds have dispersed

But the race is not done

On that empty track lane

May we grab the baton and run
