The Cocoon

Under the night sky, beneath the full moon

The caterpillar sways from a dead leaf

It hangs upside down in a silk cocoon

In that safe shield its time will be brief

The old caterpillar's body soon dies

Transformation is what the darkness brings

Out of isolation it will arise

Its whole life's purpose is to form its wings

Colors develop from angles of light

In that silk home it changes its features

What was grounded will forever take flight

You would not know it is the same creature

A new monarch emerges from the trees

The new butterfly soaring with the breeze
